Expert treatment for chronic migraines
If you have suffered from chronic migraines for at least 6 months then the cost of the medication is now covered by the PBS if you are seen and treated by one of our Neurologists. The treatment involves localised injections at trigger points over the head.
To qualify for treatment you must have had an inadequate response, been intolerant to, or have a contraindication to at least three prophylactic migraine medications.
e.g. propranolol, amitriptyline, methysergide, pizotifen, cyproheptadine or topiramate
Studies of the treatment have consistently demonstrated a 50% or greater reduction from baseline in the number of headache days per month. Treatment is conducted every 12 weeks and the benefits will be continually monitored.
Other benefits of the chronic migraine treatment
Results can be seen in days
Studies that have assessed patients after 28 days have revealed a significant difference in the reduction in headache days. 1
Cumulative effect of the treatment
A study of patients receiving the treatment for over a year revealed a significant difference in the reduction in headache days when compared with patients who have only had treatment for 6 months.
Convenience and patient adherence to treatment
Given that the treatment is administered by a Neurologist every 12 weeks then the results can be assessed with any of your concerns to ensure continued adequate dosing.
Uniqueness of mechanism of action with minimal side effects
This is a potential advantage over orally administered treatments which often have systemic side effects that limit their use. In addition since the treatment works differently compared with currently-available therapies it can be used in patients who do not respond to these therapies. It might also have an additive effect over existing prophylactic medication.
Not contraindicated with other medications
Patients with chronic migraine often suffer from other associated medical conditions that require medications eg depression, anxiety and other types of chronic pain.
