Migraine relief
Medications and injections to prevent migraines are the most widely used and researched ways to relieve migraine. However, there are other forms of therapy that may produce some relief from migraine, in certain patients.
Biofeedback, cognitive-behavioural therapy, and relaxation therapy are frequently effective against migraine headaches and may be used in conjunction with medical treatments. Occipital nerve stimulators (devices inserted under the scalp to stimulate the nerve that may play a role in migraine) may be helpful in patients who do not respond to other forms of treatment.
Overall, trials of treatments other than standard medical treatments have produced average reduction in migraine frequency by 40-50% however, the evidence remains limited.
It is important to address all your health needs as a whole when managing any chronic medical condition. Adequate sleep, quality nutrition and exercise play a critical role in maintaining quality of life and improving mood and ability to cope. Your GP can help you weigh up the benefits of treatments for your migraine, and provide support for your general wellbeing and ability to manage this chronic condition.
