Injections for migraines
For the past century, treatment for migraine has mainly focused on medications or tablets that work to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. Only recently has there been a focus on injections that may act at the physical site of migraine pain and migraine trigger points to prevent the onset of migraine.
Recently, a large trial was conducted to study the effectiveness of injections in the prevention of migraine. Over 1000 people who suffer from chronic migraines were treated in the trial. These migraine sufferers had intractable, chronic migraine that had failed to respond to at least 3 conventional preventive medications.
Patients are injected with tiny doses of a medication most commonly known for its use in cosmetic treatments. These injections are made into the scalp and temple, in a procedure that is done in the doctor's surgery and take only 10-15 minutes. It is well tolerated and has few side effects. The study showed that these injections may reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks for 2-3 months after the injections were given.
The injections must be administered every 2-3 months to maintain their effectiveness. Patients who receive these injections during the trial reported not only a reduction in migraines, but also significantly reduced headache-related disability and improved functioning, vitality, and overall health-related quality of life.
